Alternative Fuel Vehicles

The following Alternative Fuel Vehicle fees will apply to all registrations that begin on or have a renewal date of July 1, 2016.

Non-Commercial Motor Vehicle Fee: $204.20
Commercial Motor Vehicle Fee: $306.31

These fees apply to the following vehicles:
a) Vehicles that operate solely on electricity, regardless of whether the owner uses an
alternative fuel vehicle license plate.
b) Plug-in hybrid-electric or flex fuel vehicles (such as E-85), but only if those vehicles
have elected an alternative fuel vehicle license plate.

These fees do not apply to the following vehicles:
a) Vehicles that operate primarily on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, or
liquefied petroleum gas.
b) Hybrid-electric vehicles that are not plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles.

These fees are in addition to existing license fees and annual ad valorem taxes when applicable.

The Transportation Funding Act of 2015 (House Bill 170) became effective July 1, 2015. This Bill created a new definition and annual fee for Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV):

- $200 for non-commercial Alternative Fuel Vehicles
- $300 for commercial Alternative Fuel Vehicles


The new definition of Alternative Fuel Vehicles are those fueled by:
  • Pure electric This is the only AFV type required to pay the AFV fee. The owners have the option to purchase the AF plate. (Note: electric off road all terrain vehicles may be subject to the AFV fee.)
  • Natural gas (Owners have the option to purchase the AF plate, they are not required to pay the AFV fee)
    • LNG - Liquefied Natural Gas
    • CNG - Compressed Natural Gas
  • Propane (LPG - Liquefied Petroleum Gas) (Owners have the option to purchase the AF plate, they are not required to pay the AFV fee)
  • Flex Fuel (E-85, etc.) (Owners have the option to receive the AF plate. If the AF plate is chosen, the AFV fee must be paid; otherwise the fee is not due)
  • Gas plus electric (Plug in Hybrid vehicles - Chevrolet Volt, Prius Plug in, etc.) (Owners have the option to receive the AF plate. If the AF plate is chosen, the AFV fee must be paid; otherwise the fee is not due)
PLUG IN HYBRIDS
    • Gas + Electric motor
    • Batteries charged by plugging into the grid
    • Can run without gasoline engine
These fees are in addition to existing license fees and annual ad valorem taxes when applicable.

NOTE: Conventional Hybrid vehicles (Prius Hybrid, Civic Hybrid, etc.) are not considered AF vehicles and will not be charged the AFV fee and will not be eligible for the AF plate.

CONVENTIONAL HYBRIDS
    • Gas + electric motor
    • Batteries charged through braking
    • Works with gasoline engine
